Vitamin K for Stretch Marks – The Unknown Key to Glowing Skin?

We’ve all heard that vitamins are essential in treating stretch marks, which brings us to today’s question – what can vitamin K do for your skin? Vitamin K is a lesser-known vitamin, especially when compared to vitamins A and C.

In the past, we’ve looked at what vitamin E oil can do for stretch marks. Likewise, we’ve discussed the benefits of using vitamin pro B5 to treat stretch marks, and now we turn to see if vitamin K creams and products can also be beneficial.

Vitamin K and Your Skin – Is Vitamin K Good For Stretch Marks?

One of the reasons why vitamin K is such a popular ingredient in skin care products is that it’s been proven to improve skin elasticity. Naturally, with better elasticity, your skin will be more prepared to deal with drastic weight change, leading to stretch marks in the first place.

One study that compared Caucasian women’s skin to that of Japanese women (whose diet is naturally much higher in vitamin K) found that a high intake of the vitamin does indeed make your skin more elastic and improves the production of collagen.

This improved collagen aspect is what makes vitamin K great for both the prevention of stretch marks and the treatment of existing stripes. Boosted collagen and elastin build new, healthy layers of skin cells, which gradually replace the damaged area and, at the very least, make your marks fade considerably.

Vitamin K is an essential element for proper blood-clotting. This, in turn, is what encourages skin cell regeneration and wound healing. And since stretch marks are wounds, a good vitamin K treatment can speed up the recovery tremendously.

But here, we’re talking mostly about vitamin K as part of your diet, and not as a topical cream. Indeed, if you want to enjoy the full benefits of vitamin K for your body, I would encourage that you increase your intake (as well as try a cream).

Green foods have a high vitamin K content, generally, so spinach, seaweed, kale, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts – all of these should play a bigger role in your diet if you truly want improved bone health, better skin elasticity, etc. The average adult requires between 90 and 120 mg of vitamin K a day. Now, all of the foods above contain more than that, so even just one serving per day will cover your basic needs.

By ingesting a healthy dose of vitamin K, your body is essentially working from the inside out to heal the skin’s damage. But if you want to attack the problem from both sides, you’ll want to look for a good vitamin K skincare product.

Topical creams containing vitamin K have a good track record of fading dark or pigmented skin, so they may come in particularly handy if you’re dealing with annoying, colorful stretch marks.

So Which Products Should I Go For?

There are quite a few vitamin K creams for stretch marks out there. The Reviva Vitamin K cream is marketed for its ability to “improve the appearance of bruised skin,” for example. Unfortunately, there aren’t any reviews that talk specifically about its effectiveness on stretch marks. It also contains phenoxyethanol, so I suggest that pregnant/nursing stay away from this product.

Other than that, it does seem to be a good product, with many natural (apricot, mango, etc.) extracts, so worth a try.

Another popular option is the K-Max 5% Vitamin K Cream from Skin Beauty Solutions. What I like about this one is the addition of Hyaluronic Acid and Green Tea (great for collagen production and revitalizing of damaged skin). However, the opinions on this one seem to be seriously divided, as some love it, and some hate it. It’s also a tad more expensive than the Reviva, especially if you go for the 2-ounce, so not sure about this one.

Lastly, you can check out the Vita-K Professional Stretch Mark Cream. It’s a more budget-friendly option, but from what I can see, it acts more as a cover for stretch marks than an effective treatment. I wasn’t able to track down the study they advertised or the ingredient list, so maybe try this if you want to hide stretch marks.
