When it comes to home kits, there’s no doubt that one of the best choices you’ll ever going to have is the Neutrogena microdermabrasion system. Besides the effectiveness of the product, you can also depend on the reputation and track record of the manufacturer behind the name.
How Microdermabrasion Can Help Stretch Marks
What makes microdermabrasion a treatment you should seriously consider? It’s normal for your body, especially your face, to age. However, if they appear quite fast or when they do at an earlier time, you can’t help but somehow wish the fine lines and wrinkles are less noticeable.
This is where microdermabrasion can be of great help. The process usually involves the removal of the topmost layer of the skin called stratum corneum. This is composed of dead skin cells. If the facial issues are only superficial, the elimination of dead skin cells can reveal new ones, making the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and scars, among others, greatly reduced or lightened.
According to the manufacturer, a one week study showed an improvement in complexion in over 90% of the subjects. The Microdermabrasion System seemed to smooth out the skin and improve the appearance of fine lines.
Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System at Home
Neutrogena has come up with two choices for at-home microdermabrasion.
The first one is called the Neutrogena microdermabrasion machine. This equipment makes use of very fine crystals that are being blasted off into the skin. They will then lift off the dead skin cells so that they can be easily removed.
The machine also comes with a mild purifier to clean the skin and make it a lot softer and smoother to touch.
Depending on the crystals you use, the machine can also provide anti-bacterial properties to the skin to prevent infection.
The vibrations from the portable device can also increase the circulation of the blood on the skin. Thus, your face will be more radiant.
How Often Should I Use the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion Kit?
In an effort to achieve our best skin, we tend to over-use certain ‘miracle products’ in the hope we can make the effects of prolonged use in just a few weeks. This is a mistake, in fact, because your skin does not work that way.
Especially in the case of microdermabrasion, too much use of a certain product or machine can be aggressive to the skin. It might even cause damage, such as scrapes or bruising (and potentially increased sensitivity).
This is because your skin cannot regenerate as quickly as you’d like, and by using a Microderm kit excessively, you’re only hindering the skin’s natural healing process. In other words, don’t overdo it.
The Neutrogena exfoliating machine can be used as often as every day, or less, depending on your skin type. We’d recommend using it 2-3 times a week if your skin is sensitive, or if you’ve never used such a device before, just so that your skin can get accustomed to it.
The Neutrogena Face Scrubber Machine User’s Guide
Right, so now that we’ve established how often you should use Neutrogena during the course of a week, let’s talk a bit about how you use it.
- What you want to do is attach the puff to the Neutrogena attachment head (we’ll talk a bit more about puffs in just a minute).
- Make sure the blue side is up and press down gently but firmly on the attachment head, in order to secure it.
- Once you’re sure, the puff is firmly in place, wet it with care (make sure you don’t drench it).
- After wetting the puff thoroughly, snap on the Neutrogena applicator and turn on the power.
- Massage the desired skin area for a couple of minutes before moving on to the next bit of skin, until you’ve covered the entire area. You don’t need to clean the skin before use.
- Once you’re done using the machine, turn off the power, and rinse the skin with water. Then, dispose the microdermabrasion puff and cleanse the machine as well as you can.
The Neutrogena Microderm Puffs
So what exactly is up with these Neutrogena microdermabrasion pads? Since they’re quite different from your traditional Microderm machine, a lot of people have trouble understanding exactly how they’re supposed to use the puffs.
What Exactly Do the Neutrogena Puffs Do?
First of all, remember that you want the blue side of the pad against your skin, not the white. The pads are filled with a skin cleanser, but also with exfoliating crystals and purifiers.
The Neutrogena Microderm system follows the method of more traditional crystal-based microdermabrasion.
As the puff massages your skin, it removes build-up, as well as dead skin cells, which reveals a healthier, newer layer of skin.
How Many Times Can I Use the Neutrogena Puffs?
Technically, the puffs (or pads, if you will) are only meant for one-time use. This is because the cleanser on them is used up after the first use.
However, several customers report reusing the puffs 2 or 3 times extra by adding their own cleanser to them.
Would we recommend doing that? Possibly. If you’re keen on reusing them, then we recommend trying the cleanser switch once and seeing how your skin feels afterward. If the effect is similar, then we don’t see why not.
How Costly Are The Neutrogena Puff Refills?
The refills can be quite expensive, which is why so many people opt for reusing them. The original kit comes with 12 pads, which should be enough if you plan on using the Neutrogena 3 times a week, but will last you less than two weeks if used daily.
You can buy a 24-pad refill (which, according to the packaging, should last you 2 months, at 3 uses per week), but this is almost as expensive as the kit itself.
Given that the kit provides gentle exfoliation, many opt for using it more often (every other day or even daily), which means the refill barely lasts you through the month. This can get quite expensive, over a longer period of time.
So, What Exactly Is on Them?
Here’s where it gets a bit tricky. First, we’d like to point out the puffs are non-comedogenic, meaning the substance on them won’t cleanse your pores.
However, one major minus for us with the Neutrogena microdermabrasion system is the fact that it contains parabens, sulfates (SLS), phthalates, PEGs, and phenoxyethanol. All of these are considered harmful, both for the skin itself, but also dangerous if your skin absorbs them.
Phenoxyethanol can endanger the central nervous system of both mother and baby if absorbed during pregnancy or while nursing, so please be careful when using this product.
The puffs also contain decyl glucoside, which is an organic, mild cleanser used in the treatment of sensitive skin. It’s not meant to irritate the skin or be overly abrasive. They also have Cocamidopropyl betaine, a derivative of coconut oil, which conditions the skin.
Several users reported rashes and breakouts after use and warned against the toxic chemicals inside the pads. One user who got some of the substance into her eye couldn’t see for an hour afterward, so be careful.
Reviews – So What Do Customers Say?
Here are some of the benefits and disadvantages of the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System that stood out the most:
- leaves skin soft, smooth and shiny;
- great against dry skin;
- also good in reducing dark spots (common esp. during pregnancy);
- younger skin;
- easy to use;
- unclogs pores.
- dangerous chemicals;
- if you press too hard, you risk bruising;
- some had trouble with the battery port;
- irritating, especially to sensitive skin.
So overall, we have mixed reviews, it would seem. Several people were happy with the product, but the negative reviews, particularly the ones about the chemicals inside the puffs, should not be ignored.
While not explicitly mentioned in the advertising, it does not seem to be well suited for sensitive skin types, though it appears to be good for oily/normal skin.
Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Microdermabrasion
If you’re quite apprehensive about the machine or you need something for maintenance, you can opt for the Neutrogena microdermabrasion kit known as Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Microdermabrasion.
This is a facial resurfacing cream filled with microcrystals, similar to those found in the machine.
You can apply it with the sponge head that comes with the device and then massage gently.
Apply the cleanser first, then follow it up with this cream. The exfoliating formula also has plenty of antioxidants to keep the skin healthy at all times. The package also comes with refills.
Remember, you cannot use the product to clear pustular acne. It’s also not advisable to use when you have already exfoliated your skin with another chemical agent.
Determining the Effectiveness of Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System
So, which one is better – the Neutrogena Advanced Solutions or the Microdermabrasion System we spoke of earlier?
We’d say it depends on what you’re looking for.
Since we’re assuming you want to get rid of stretch marks, then we’d probably recommend the first product we talked of, which is the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System.
While opinions among customers are mixed as to the efficacy of Neutrogena Advanced Solutions, most seem to agree it’s a decent exfoliation method. However, it looks too light to be of much use in treating stretch marks (which happen on the middle layer of your skin).
However, based on what people are saying, the product is effective—only if you don’t have very serious skin problems or when you are satisfied with smaller results.
But since stretch marks are more serious than, say, saggy skin (related to old age) or a few wrinkles, we’d recommend sticking with the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System, if you had to choose between the two.
Another major factor that contributed to this decision is the fact that the Advanced Solutions product no longer seems to be available on the official website or Amazon, and we would not advise you to buy from somewhere else, as you risk getting scammed.
We hope our review of this product has given you a clear idea of what you can expect with the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System and helped you decide whether it’s the right product for you or not.
